China Trip 2016 - Beijing Drum Tower - page 2
Our first tour activity in Beijing was a visit to the Drum Tower, followed by a visit to the Hutongs next door.

Drum towers were used in China to signal the start of the day, in an era when there were no public clocks or watches. They were coupled with a Bell Tower, which was used to signal the end of the (working) day. After a steep climb up into the Drum Tower, we witnessed a demonstration of the drum cadence that was used 'back in the day' to get peopple moving.
